Ukulele Guild of Hawai‘i Treasures Criteria

‘Ukulele Treasures Mission Statement: To recognize
outstanding acheivement in the fields of performance and history.
Players
Nominees may be living or deceased, but all else being equal preference
should be given to the living. Nominees worldwide should be considered.
Nominees recognized similarly by other groups are eligible, however,
among equals, those candidates with the least general recognition
should be given precedence.
Nominees should have demonstrated a significant commitment (i.e.,
lifetime) to ‘ukulele performance and a willingness to share
their talent publicly. Current panelists are ineligible to be considered
as treasures.
Nominees must exhibit:
(a) outstanding mastery of the instrument
(b) ability to present the ‘ukulele as a featured solo instrument
and not merely as an accompanying instrument
(c) repertoire that demands extraordinary musicianship beyond that
required of ordinary simple songs
(d) lyricism, musicality, and a fine sense of interpretation
Finally, evidence of any or all of the above must be documented
in audio and/or video recordings.
Historians
Nominees may be living or deceased, but all else being equal preference
should be given to the living. Nominees worldwide should be considered.
Nominees recognized similarly by other groups are eligible, however,
all things being equal, those candidates with the least general
recognition should be favored.
Nominees should demonstrate a significant contribution to preserving
the history of the ‘ukulele (i.e., one major project or a
lifetime commitment) and a willingness to publish their research.
Current panelists are ineligible to be considered as treasures.
Nominees must:
(a)address all aspects of the field of history, including research,
teaching, and publishing
(b)exhibit the highest standards of reasearch practice, whether
written or oral, always seeking the source, or primary information
(c)demonstrate a willingness to share information with others through
film and video, lectures, classes, or broadcast media
(d)have published work of recognized high value
(e)be able to place research in musical, social, historical, and
political context
Nominating Procedure
UGH members may nominate as many individuals as they want in each
of the two categories (player and historian). Each nomination in
the player category must include the following information on a
letter-size (8.5 by 11 inch) piece of paper: the name of the person
making the nomination, the name of the nominee, and at least one
recording (cassette tape or burnt CD) and a bio of the nominee,
plus any other supporting materials (newspaper clippings, etc.).
Each nomination in the historian category must include the following
information on a letter-size (8.5 by 11 inch) piece of paper: the
name of the person making the nomination, the nominee’s contributions
to ‘ukulele history in whatever SPECIFIC forms the contributions
were made: published articles, books, movies, video projects, etc.;
the date of the contribution; the publisher’s name and contact
information.
Please use a separate sheet of paper for each nomination. Mail packets
to arrive before Sept. 30, 2004 to:
